Encorps! People Recycling for the Arts
Created out of an economic need, designed with an educational purpose, and supporting a green community, our project is innovative and practical.
CCM Prep envisions a recycling business. We would like to open up a store that sells recycled materials, ideal for teachers, scout leaders, church school directors, parents or any person who enjoys using unusual materials to create useful or artistic objects out of them. Recycled material such as cardboard tubes, plastic packaging, fabrics, paper and other castoffs can be refashioned as musical instruments, toys, art projects and practical household items, particularly in organized educational settings. Such projects can stimulate creative and higher level thinking, encourage recycling and sustainability, and at a low cost to users. We envision area industries, large and small, donating clean materials of different types – plastic, cardboard, rubber, fabric, containers, etc. to us. We would stock and sell materials by the bag to customers. A similar nonprofit store, The Scrapbox, www.scrapbox.com/ has operated in Ann Arbor, Mich., for many years.
At the core of the business would be encouraging creativity via arts education. The discarded materials can be the source for classes and workshops in set building, props and costuming, as well as instrument making and other visual arts experiences that complement the educational offerings of CCM Prep.
This business would be largely staffed by volunteers, including students receiving financial aid and their families. Schools and community theaters that wish to participate in cooperative set building and props could volunteer in lieu of payment. Any profit generated would go back to CCM Prep to support the school.
